PTDR-1000: Strategically Sized

The size of the PTDR-1000 facility was selected as a balance between two contrasting concerns: it is large enough to establish economies of scale, while small enough for regulators to become comfortable with the equipment and process thereby facilitating and simplifying the permit approval process. Finally, the facility size will not be considered any sort of local transportation burden as approximately 5-6 semi-trailers would be required daily - around 25,000 kilograms (55,000 pounds) required per day. As a rule of thumb, 6,800 kilograms (15,000 lbs) of medical waste typically fill one semi-trailer. As for other waste streams, such as off-spec pharmaceutical waste; approximately 10,000 kilograms (22,500 lbs) fill one semi-trailer. Other important considerations:

The capacity scales up from previously completed proof of concept projects and incorporates operational lessons learned from these projects;
The capital costs of the facility are modest enough to facilitate various financing options; and
The operational costs at this capacity are competitive with other conventional methods of treatment and disposal.
